ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Compounds of the formula (IV) are provided: Image (IV) wherein: X is a protected carbonyl group: R1 is a C1-5 alkyl group, a C3-6 alkenyl group, a C3-6 cycloalkyl group or an alkylphenyl group in which the alkyl moiety is C1-3 alkyl and the phenyl moiety is optionally substituted; R2 is a hydroxyl group, or a group OR4 wherein R4 is a C2-7 acyl group, a C1-4 alkyl group, or an optionally substituted benzyl group; R3 is hydrogen or a C1-5 alkyl group; or R2 and R5 together represents an oxo group. These compounds are useful as intermediates in the preparation of certain steroids intended for the treatment of androgen dependent skin disorders.
