ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A predictive encoder for producing a prediction error signal in response to an autocorrelated signal of the same type as a television broad- cast signal compares at least three prediction signals to produce a selection signal indicative of each of at least two of the prediction signals which give a better approximation of the autocorrelated signal than the remaining prediction signal or signals. The encoder selects the at least two prediction signals according to the selection signal, again selects one of the at least two prediction signals according to the prediction error signal, and sends the selection signal together with the prediction error signal. A predictive decoder for use in combination with the encoder reproduces the prediction error signal and the selection signal, produces at least three prediction signals corresponding to those used in the encoder, selects at least two thereof according to the reproduced selection signal, and again selects one of the last-mentioned at least two prediction signals according to the re- produced prediction error signal. Preferably, one of the at least two predic- tion signals is a predetermined prediction signal. At the beginning of pro- duction of the prediction error signal and reproduction of the autocorrelated signal, selection is preferred of a preselected one of the at least two prediction signals.
