ABSTRACT A self supporting tunnel is formed directly above a recovery zone in a subterranean ore deposit, such as oil shale. A room is formed having horizontal dimensions corresponding approximately to the horizontal cross section of the recovery zone. A vertical raise is formed in the middle of the recovery zone between the tunnel and the room. The ore in the recovery zone is fragmented in sequential steps to fill the raise and the room. The top of the recovery zone is also filled with fragmented ore to support the overburden, and is spaced downwardly from the tunnel to form therebetween a pillar of unfragmented ore. The room is the base of operations in preparation for fragmentation. A processing fluid is introduced into the recovery zone from the tunnel to release constituents from the ore and to transport the constituents to the bottom of the recovery zone. The constituents are removed from the bottom of the recovery zone. In working a large deposit, a plurality of recovery zones are arranged in row and columns, the tunnel is part of a network communicating with the tops of the recovery zones and the room is part of a grid of rooms from which the recovery zones are prepared. - 1 -
