ABSTRACT The interlocking system according to the invention, by the use of multicomputer systems, achieves fail-safety without electromechanical storage- type switching means. The division of the interlocking territory into smaller geographical control areas is independent of the arrangement of these control areas. The size of the control areas is limited so that microcomputers can be used in the associated central modules. The overlap of the control areas insures that a failure of a central module does not result in a restriction of operation. Any simultaneous failure of several central modules will lead to a restriction of operation only if modules have failed which are assigned to adjacent control areas. The departure from a purely geographical inter- locking principle permits better storage utilization - the admissibility of control actions is checked, for example, with the air of locking sheets programmed into read-only memories. The instantaneous state of the route elements is no longer obtained from storage-type switching means contained in the element groups but from the route elements themselves, which provide safe status reports upon request. Thus the exchange of information between the central modules and their peripherals can take place via a data bus as is suitable for computers, it being possible to sort the information according to its relative importance and to give it priority in the processing sequence if necessary. In larger interlocking installations, separate communication modules may be provided for managing two separate data buses serving to exchange information with the operating and display facilities or with the control modules for, and the sensors of, the route elements.
