ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A battery plate grid comprising a composite molded plastic support and interlocking metallic fingers having an integral lug. The grid is produced by first molding the lug and metallic fingers while forming a plurality of connecting points along the fingers and the lug in first and second mold halves. The connecting points are forced by utilizing retractable pins within the first mold half. After casting of the metallic fingers and lag of the grid, the second half of the mold is withdrawn while the metallic casting remains in the first half of the mold. A third mold half is then positioned adjacent the first mold half and has a portion of the desired plastic supporting pattern forced therein and the plastic material is injected. The pins are retracted prior to or during the injection of the plastic material permitting the plastic to flow into the space vacated by the pins in the first mold half and form interlocking joints with the metallic structure. The first and third mold halves are then separated and the finished composite grid may be removed.
