ABSTRACT A material handling system for dense storage and selective movement of a plurality of pallets including a pair of adjacent transfer aisles, a plurality of longi- tudinally aligned compartments in each of the transfer aisles sized to accommodate the pallets, storage rows extending laterally of each of the pair of adjacent trans- fer aisles, a plurality of compartments in the storage rows aligned with the compartments in the transfer aisles. Drive apparatus is provided for selective bidirectional movement of pallets in the compartments of the transfer aisles to adjacent compartments in the storage rows and adjacent compartments in the transfer aisles while drive apparatus is required only for unidirectional movement of pallets positioned in the storage rows to adjacent compart- ments in the same storage row.
