-24- PR-5078/5207/5208 CARBONATION PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF SODIUM BICARBONATE Abstract of the Disclosure Sodium bicarbonate of controlled crystal size, habit and bulk density is produced by dispersing carbon dioxide into a saturated solution of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate or a slurry of sodium bicarbonate in a saturated solution of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate for reaction therewith. The reaction is carried out generally at a temperature of about 50° to about 120°C in the presence of sufficient Ca++ ion so that a specified amount of Ca++ ion is found in the crystallized sodium bicarbonate.
