ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An object such as a food packaging material is sterilized by being first immersed in ethanol or other alcohol and then by being irradiated with ultra- violet rays. Alternatively, the object is simultane- ously subjected to both steps of sterilization, by being exposed to ultraviolet rays while being dipped in ethanol. The ethanol is itself sterilized, as by filtration and ultraviolet irradiation, while being recirculated through a closed circuit. The apparatus is disclosed as adapted for the sterilization of a continuous strip of food packaging film.
