ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed for preparing a nickel catalyst, which comprises slurrying a nickel metal precursor dissolved in a nonaqueous organic liquid solvent with a high surface area refractory oxide support, removing the solvent to obtain a composite of the nickel metal precursor and the support, and activating the composite by reducing in hydrogen or hydrogen diluted with an inert gas at conditions sufficient to convert substantially all of the nickel metal precursor to nickel metal. The catalysts so produced are characterized as having the nickel in a more highly dispersed state than prior art catalysts, and are useful in hydrogenation, reforming and hydro- carbon synthesis reactions.
