A B S T R A C T _ _ _ _ _ _ _ This invention relates to a circuit arrangement for storing a text. In a text store, code words corresponding to the characters of the text are stored and are combined to form hierarchically classified groups corres- ponding to predetermined text portions. In an allocating store, allocating data are stored which are adapted to indicate the position of each group and the number of the character positions for each group in the text store. In a representation of combination characters comprising a plurality of characters the code words in the text store are stored in one main group and in at least one sub-group. A dividing into main group an sub groups affords that, independent from the sequence of the input, the characters will always be stored in the same manner. The invention makes efficient use of the store.
