ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the microbiological production of ketones from lower alkanes or alcohols. Specifically, the process of the inven- tion comprises contacting C3-C6 alkanes or C3-C6 secondary alcohols under aerobic conditions with resting microbial cells derived from a methylotrophic microorganism or enzyme preparation derived from said cells, wherein the microorganism has previously been grown under aerobic conditions in a nutrient medium containing a carbon and energy source which is an inducer for the enzyme(s) responsible for producing the ketones, e.g., methane, methanol, dimethyl ether, methylamine, methyl formate, methyl carbonate, ethanol, propanol, butanol, etc. Also disclosed is a process for aerobically converting C3-C6 secondary alcohols with yeast cells aerobically grown on C1 compounds and their enzyme preparations. Isolation and purification of a novel C3-C6 secondary alcohol dehydrogenase is also disclosed.
