ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A rotary actuator for example for use in flight control systems, comprises a first modular housing including a stress-responsive device in the form of a torsion spring mounted in a casing and surrounding an output shaft; and a second modular housing including a reduction gear, coupled to the casing of the stress-responsive device through the adjoining faces of the hous- ings, a clutch and damping means. The distance between the axis of the stress-responsive device and the axis of the reduction gear can be adjusted by selection of the thickness of a packing member between the housings. The second housing may include a motor act- ing through a second reduction gear and the clutch to adjust the angular position of the effective anchorage provided by the stress- responsive device. Alternatively, the side of the clutch remote from the stress-responsive device may be rigid with the second housing and the clutch may act as a brake.
