ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Thin invention relates to a process for producing and maintaining a fluidized bed in a heterogeneous system and to an apparatus for carrying out the same. This process essentially comprises feeding the heterogeneous system in a column between at least two bases arranged over one another, opposed to one another and inclined in relation to the horizontal, said column forming a turbulent compartment in which the heterogeneous system is stirred in a turbulent movement because of the gravity and in which the heavier phase concentrates above the lower base, especially in its lower area, and from there flows into the space below the lower base while the lighter phase concentrates below the upper base, especially in its upper area, and from there flows into the space above the upper base or is conducted out of the column, the disperse phase thus being conducted through the column either in the direction from top to bottom when having a density greater than that of the continuous phase, or in the direction from bottom to top when having a density smaller than that of the continuous phase.
