ABSTRACT The clamping apparatus (1, 1a) is adapted for testing a flanged device (2) having a casing (3) defining a chamber (3a) and at least one annular end flange (4) disposed on a horizontal test plate (22) having a fluid inlet (23). At least one clamping unit (10) is provided which comprises a lever (18) disposed in a radial direction relative to the center of the annular flange (4). The lever has an outer end (18a) detachably resting on an underlying support (17a, 38a), and an inner end (18b) gripping a portion of the flange (4). A fulcrum (13) is fixedly mounted above the lever intermediate its inner and outer ends. The lever is adapted to pivot about the fulcrum. A hydraulic ram (15a, 40a) exerts a vertical force against one end of the lever, thereby causing the inner end of the lever to exert a predetermined clamping pressure on the flange, so as to obtain a fluid-tight connection between the flange and the plate.
