ABSTRACT A method and apparatus for forming a wrapping for a shipment unit such as lumber. The wrapping usually of a plastic material has a center portion which is of the same length as the unit and encloses the latter on three sides and has at least one fixed end piece. At least one end of the center piece is folded in a U-shape and an end piece is heat welded in a position perpendicular to the one end, using a speci- ally shaped table halving an end face width substantially equal to the width of the bottom of the U, the end face being provided with a vacuum plate which holds the and piece in place. A movable frame carrying welding elements moves into and out of contact with the table.
