ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a novel process for preparing 1-[.alpha.-(carboxy)-4-protected-hydroxybenzyl]-3- acylaminoazetidin-2-one esters, useful intermediates for preparing antibiotic FR 1923, comprising reacting a 3- acylamino-4-(2-oxaalkylthio)azetidin-2-one ester with sulfuryl chloride, followed by reduction with an organo tin hydride, e.g., tri(n-butyl)tin hydride.
