ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An aircraft is described wherein a fuselage having a longi- tudinal axis, a wing assembly and a tail assembly are provided. The engine configuration comprises the combination of at least a pair of low by-pass ratio turbofan engines supported by the wing assembly, and at least one high by-pass ratio turbofan engine supported by the tail assembly. The engines are so positioned with respect to the longitudinal axis as to enable selected operation of each engine type under predetermined conditions to provide the major portion of propulsive thrust to the aircraft under those conditions. Preferably, twin Rolls Royce Spey 606 low by-pass ratio engines or their equivalent are supported by the wing assembly while the tail assembly supports a Rolls Royce RB 432 high by-pass ratio turbofan engine or its equivalent.
