ABSTRACT "METHOD OF FORMING SEALING GASKETS IN CONTAINER CLOSURES" The invention relates to forming sealing gaskets in container closures of a high-melting olefin polymer, especially polypropylene. Sealing gaskets for metal closures, especially bottle caps, have conveniently been formed in the closure by depositing therein a plastisol of a vinyl chloride resin, shaping it and fluxing it in an air oven at 190 to 250°C. The above process cannot be applied to polypropylene closures, melting at about 165°C, using the conventional plastisols. Attempts to use plastisols which flux at a lower temperature failed because of other problems. Other processes proposed involved supplying energy to the plastisol inside the closure without heating the closure itself directly. Thus microwave heating was tried but led to intolerable overheating of the interior of the plastisol in order to flux its surface adequately. The invention uses a combination of microwave heating and controlled heating by conventional means. Even though the conventional heating is not by itself sufficient to flux the plastisol, the combination has surprisingly been found to cause the surfaces of the gasket to be adequately fluxed without the overheating effect. The controlled conventional heating produces a closure temperature of from 5 to 35°C, preferably 5 to 15°C below its melting point at the time of the microwave heating. The invention is useful in the gasketting of closures of high-melting olefin polymers principally for bottle caps, jar lids etc.
