METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR WATER TREATMENT Abstract of the Disclosure For water treatment in swimming pools and the like it is desired to feed various chemicals at optimum rates into the water which is recirculated through the system which usually includes a filter. It has been discovered that the chemicals can be fed by enclosing them in capsules substantially of the size and composition of tennis balls. The rate of feeding depends upon the size and number of small holes which are provided or which the user pokes through the shell of the capsule, upon the solubility of the chemical, and upon the flow rate of the water through the strainer, skimmer, or other chamber in the system into which the capsule is introduced. The rate of feeding is substantially independent of the physical form of the chemical as introduced or the amount of chemical remaining in the capsule. Since the chemicals are typically more dense than water, a capsule made of plastic will sink when full and float when depleted due to air re- maining in the capsule. In the preferred embodiment this property provides a convenient indication of the need for replenishment. If the chemical is an organic flocculant, in dry form consisting of high molecular-weight polymer which is very difficult to dissolve, the chemical can be fed by enclosing it in a bag made of fine-mesh fabric instead of in a capsule. Invention is seen in the new use of such a capsule or bag for the purpose indicated.
