ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for removing oxides of sulfur from a waste gas stream in a wet scrubber. The process provides for intro- ducing a controlled amount of SO2 reactant solution and a controlled amount of fly ash solution, formed from fly ash removed from the gas stream prior to its introduction into the scrubber, into the scrubber while removing a controlled amount of the resulting solution and circulating it to a recycle tank A controlled amount of alkali solution is added to the result- ing solution in the recycle tank to maintain a pH of from 4.0 to 8.0 and this solution is in turn circulated back to the scrubber as the reactant solution.
