ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Animal and/or vegetable materials are ensiled biologic- ally with the aid of lactic acid forming bacteria and carbo- hydrate materials which can be converted to lactic acid. To facilitate the ensiling process. selected acid tolerant lactic acid forming bacteria of the species Streptococcus faecalis are added to the starting materials, together with fermentable carbo- hydrates, materials which degrade starch into fermentable carbo- hydrates, and/or selected lactic acid forming starch degrading bacterial of the genera Streptococcus and Leuconostoc.
