PRODUCTION OF OLEFINS Abstract of the Disclosure A process for converting alcohols or ethers having no more than four carbon atoms per alkyl group to olefins, comprising contacting the alcohol or ether with a catalyst comprising a crystalline alumino-silicate zeolite having a constraint index from 1.0 to 12.0, a silica/alumina ratio of 12 to 3000 and a crystal density in the dry hydrogen form not substantially less than 1.6 g./cc., characterized by effecting the contacting at a space velocity sufficiently high to permit conversion of no more than 25 percent by weight of ether and alcohol contacted. These process condi- tions show a preference for olefin production with over 85% of the reactant feed being convertible to steam and olefins.
