ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of joining abutting surfaces of polymeric material includes disposing between the surfaces insert means formed of thermoplastic material having dispersed therein a heat-activatable cross-linking agent. Reinforce- ment in the form of a foraminous member is positioned along the line of the join. The resulting assembly is heated under compression to cause the insert means to flow and the cross-linking agent to be activated. As a result, the insert means becomes bonded to the surfaces of the polymeric material and to the reinforcement means. One article produced by this method is in the form of a sleeve, the line of the join being substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve. The join is continuous from one end of the sleeve to the other and is of essentially the same thickness as the walls of the sleeve.
