Case 4327 IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESS FOR OBTAINING TRISODIUM CARBOXY METHYLOXY SUCCINIC ACID SOLUTIONS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved method is provided for processing a reaction slurry of the calcium salt of carboxy methyloxy succinic acid. A high quality solution of the trisodium salt (Na3CMOS), containing low level amounts of calcium ion and side reaction impurities can be obtained. The improved operations comprise adjusting the pH of the solution to a value of about 5.5 to 9, preferably about 7, and reacting with a carbonate for precipitating calcium carbonate. The carbonate or exchange reaction is characterized by a cook period and a separation in which the system is maintained at about 70 to 125°C., preferably to 100°C. for a sufficient period to reduce the calcium ion content to a desired level but insufficient to cause significant side reaction, and thereafter separating the liquid phase and precipitated calcium carbonate while maintaining the temperature in the elevated temperature range. The filtered solution is thereafter cooled and methanol can be added thereto in preparation for crystallizing a high quality hydrated product therefrom.
