ABSTRACT A process and apparatus for treating sewage and the like in which the sewage and the like are flowed in sequence through an aerated Activated Sludge (A.S.) zone, then through an aerated Biological Moving Filter Bed (BMFB) and then finally through a non-aerated Biological Stable Filter Bed (BFSB) or settling zone; the sewage and the like is recycled through said A.S. and BMFB zones and the said BSFB is backwashed as often as required to maintain the operating effectiveness and an acceptable headloss at the point of withdrawl of the treated effluent.
