ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved process for converting sulfur contain- ing hydrocarbon feedstocks using a catalyst which is periodi- cally regenerated to remove carbonaceous deposits, the catalyst being comprised of a mixture containing as a major component, solid particles capable of promoting hydrocarbon conversion at hydrocarbon conversion conditions, and, as a minor component, discrete entities comprising a major amount of at least one material capable of associating with sulfur trioxide at the conditions in the catalyst re- generation zone and capable of disassociating with sulfur trioxide at the conditions in the hydrocarbon conversion zone, thereby reducing the amount of sulfur oxides emitted to the atmosphere from hydrocarbon conversion units, pro- vided that the discrete entities are more attrition resis- tant than the solid particles.
