A B S T R A C T It is known, in the formulation of dentifrice compositions to include therein an abrasive to clean and polish teeth. In the prior art anhydrous aluminum particles having a diameter of about 15 microns have been used as abrasives. The present invention provides a dentifrice comprising, as an abrasive, alpha-alumina which is in the form of flakes having an average diameter of less than 20 microns and thicknesses of less than about 3 microns, the proportion of said alpha-alumina being above 0.1% and less than 60%. Dentifrice compositions in accordance with the present invention have superior tooth polishing and cleaning properties and a superior flavour retention.
