THE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for the extraction of metal ions from an aqueous solution of one or more metal salts which comprises intimately contacting this solution with an organic acid dissolved in an organic solvent which is at least substantially immiscible with water, said acid being a thioether carboxylic acid having 8-24 carbon atoms and being of the general formula Image where R represents a hydrocarbon group with 1-16 carbon atoms, X and Y represent, independently of each other, a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group with 1-16 carbon atoms, n is 0 or 1, and when n is 1 X also may be a carboxyl group.
