ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Polyoxyalkylene surfactants for cellular foams can be pre- pared by reacting under free radical polymerization conditions a polyoxyalkylene adduct, a cyclic nitrogenous vinyl monomer and an esterified unsaturated dibasic acid in the presence of an organic or inorganic per-compound and a metal catalyst. Thus there is disclosed a process for preparing a surfactant for cellular foams comprising reacting a cyclic nitrogenous vinyl monomer of the formula Image , wherein n is 3, 4, or 5, and an esterified unsaturated dibasic acid containing 4 or 5 carbon atoms in the acid portion by free radical addition polymerization in the presence of (a) a polyoxyalkylene adduct having the formula Image , wherein x is an organic or inorganic radical and t is the number of polyoxyalkylene chains reacted onto R, (b) an organic or in- organic per-compound, and (c) a metal catalyst comprising a com- pound of a transition metal having an atomic number of 21 to 30 to provide a foam surfactant composition.
