A B S T R A C T The invention is concerned with a process for converting 2-deutero-3-fluoro-L-alanine to the corresponding D-isomer by reacting the L-isomer in solution in aqueous hydrohalic acid with sodium nitrite to form the L-2-deutero- 2-halo-3-fluoropropionic acid and reacting the latter with ammonia or sodium azide to replace the 2-halo by 2-azido, followed by catalytic hydrogenation.
