ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The process serves to produce diesel oil having an improved cetane number and/or donor solvent in a high yield from heteroatom -containing hydrocarbon distillates which are rich in aromatic compounds by a catalytic hydrogenation of the aromatic compounds. The hydrogenation is effected with the aid of a catalyst which contains molybdenum and nickel as active components on a support. The atomic ratio of molybdenum to nickel amounts to at least 2 and up to 3. The catalyst system which is employed should be free from acid functions. The hydrogenation is preferably effected in a trickling phase under a total pressure of 50 to 200 bars and at temperatures in the range from 300 to 450°C.
