13 ABSTRACT The object of the invention is a process and a self-propelling machine for digging trenches under water. A machine according to the invention comprises a self-propelling vehicle 1 provided with caterpillar tracks 2, which moves on the sea bed 3 and which is driven locally by an operator 6. Behind this vehicle is coupled a slide way 7, which is mounted to pivot about an axis z z1. The machine is provided with a carriage 11 moving along the slide way 7, which carries a digging tool 13, for example a ploughshare. The carriage 11 is hooked on to a cable 15 which is wound on a releasable winch 16. An application is the sinking of submarine cables into a muddy ground.
