Abstract of the Disclosure A carbon moxoxide- and zinc-containing gas is produced by the endo- thermic reaction of a carbonaceous material with zinc oxide. Zinc separated from the gas is in part reoxidized with air and in part reoxidized with H2O to form zinc oxide both in exothermic reactions. Heat developed in these exothermic reoxidations is transferred to the endothermic CO-forming reaction so that the total system is thermally neutral, in other words neither generates nor consumes heat.
