ABSTRACT An improved water based drilling mud composition is disclosed. The composition comprises an aqueous suspen- sion which contains (a) a clay material (e.g., bentonite) or other viscosity-producing agent; (b) barium hydroxide; and (c) zinc sulfate. The drilling mud composition is particularly suitable for neutralizing hydrogen sulfide which often permeates from the formation into the mud down- hole. In one aspect, the disclosure is directed to the combination of zinc sulfate and barium hydroxide, for use in preparing drill mud compositions of the type described.
