ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 2-Chloro-5-trichloromethyl pyridine is produced by reacting .beta.-picoline with chlorine in the gaseous phase at a temperature from 300 to 500°C in the presence of an inert diluent selected from nitrogen, a halo methane, a halo ethane, a halo ethylene and a mixture thereof. 2-Chloro-5-trichloromethyl pyridine is useful as an intermediate for the preparation of medicines, agricultural chemicals and dyes and especially herbicides.
