A B S T R A C T A retainer for holding a sheet of insulation against a metal plate comprises a member extending through a hole in the plate and having a flange which sits against the plate. The member has a longitudinally extending bore terminating at an enlarged chamber. A rod extends outwardly from the bore and has a head in the chamber. The rod has a frangible portion suitable for forming a stud by breaking the rod thereat. Alternately, the rod can simply extend a de- sired length from the bore to form the stud. In another em- bodiment the stud is unitary with the second end of the member and the weakened portion of the rod is within the bore. In each embodiment a cap fits over the stud to hold the insulation in place.
