ABSTRACT In ultrasonic examination of objects - particularly of organs in the human body - it is often valuable to know the variation, within the object, of the velocity of propagation of ultrasound. Previously, determination of variations in the velocity of propagation of sound has been effected using computed tomography image reconstruction techniques with data obtained from ultrasonic transmission between transducers positioned on opposite sides of the object. With objects containing barriers to ultra- sound (such as bones or gas-filled regions), data for these techniques cannot be obtained. In this specification, a technique is disclosed for measuring variation of the velocity of propagation of ultra- sound in objects by image reconstruction using reflected echoes of pulses of ultrasound. This new technique involves transmitting pulses of ultrasonic energy into the object from a plurality of spaced locations, obtaining echoes of each pulse from a predetermined point within the object, and using the shift in echoes from that point for the various input pulses to obtain information representative of the divergences of velocity of propagation of ultrasound within the object.
