ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for testing a membrane strip for the presence of holes equal to or larger than a predetermined size is disclosed. One side of the membrane is brought into contact with a membrane-incompatible electrolyte fluid, while the other side of the membrane is placed in direct contact with an electrode member which is separated by the membrane from the electrolyte fluid. An electrical potential is imposed across the membrane between the electrolyte fluid and the electrode member, while a pressure differential is also imposed across the membrane to urge the electrolyte fluid to pass through any of the holes which are larger than the predetermined size. Accordingly, an observable, hole-indicating flow of electrical current will take place when the electrolyte fluid does pass through such a hole.
