A B S T R A C T A process for the preparation of a synthetic crude oil from a tar sand oil comprising separating the tar sand oil by vacuum distillation into a vacuum distillate and a vacuum residue, hydro- cracking of the vacuum distillate, and hydrodemetallizing followed by hydrodesulphurizing of a deasphalted oil prepared from the vacuum residue.
