ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automatic drinking-apparatus for use by animals is disclosed comprising a water supply duct, a bowl and a protective hood. The water supply duct contains an aperture which is closed by a valve. The valve can be opened by a tube displaceable with two degrees of freedom and which is movable by an animal's snout. The valve is arranged under the protective hood, which is situated above the bowl, and the tube protrudes vertically below the hood towards the bottom of the bowl. In order to activate the device, the animal must drive its snout down to the bottom of the bowl, with the resulting advantages that the animal is not splashed and the animal cannot inadvertently tamper with the mechanism.
