ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the treatment of zinc sulphide is dis- closed. Zinc sulphide, especially in the form of an ore or concentrate, is reduced with a reducing agent selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, gaseous hydrocarbons, carbon and carbon monoxide, and mixtures thereof, at a temperature above the boiling point of zinc and in the presence of at least the stoichiometric amount of calcium oxide. The zinc formed is distilled off. The residue is treated with excess of a saturated aqueous solution of hydrogen sulphide and the water- soluble calcium salt formed is separated from the residue. The water-soluble calcium salt may be reconverted to calcium oxide. The process of the invention, which is potentially less subject to pollution problems, may be used to separately recover zinc and lead from zinc sulphide ores and concentrates.
