Abstract of the Disclosure Optically active allethrolone, an alcohol derivative of allethronyl chrysanthemate (allethrin), having high insecticidal activity and low toxicity to mammals is prepared by reacting ? - allethronyl acid phthalate with either optically active .alpha.-phenyl- ethylamine, optically active .alpha. -phenyl-.beta.-p-tolylethylamine, opticallyactive threo-2-dimethylamino-1-(p-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanediol or optically active napthylethylamine to form diastereoisomeric salts thereof, filtering to separate crystals of the salts of one enantiomer, cleaving the salts to form optically active allethronyl acid phthalate and hydrolyzing the phthalate to allethrolone.
