ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of and means for controlling internal tension in web rolls during winding thereof onto cores with the aid of winding drums, comprises partially winding the web rolls between the winding drums and a rider roll, backing off the rider roll from the web rolls after they have attained partial diameter, and during continuance of the winding of the web rolls to full diameter applying load-relieving lift to the web rolls through their cores. A lifting device is correlated with the operation of a winder.
