ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pregnan-21-oic acid derivative of the general formula Image (I) , which is useful for the treatment of skin diseases, is produced, for example, by oridizing a compound of the general formula Image (II) , in an alcohol containing cyanide ions and buffered to a pH of 4 to 7 with atmospheric oxygen or manganese (IV) oxide. In the above formulae, X represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom or a methyl group; Y represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom; Z represents a methylene group, a carbonyl group, a .beta.-hydroxy-methylene group or a .beta.-acyloxymethylene group, and,when Y represents a fluorine or chlorine atom, may also represent a .beta. -fluoromethylene group or a .beta.-chloromethylene group; V represents a methylene group, an ethylidene group or a vinylidene group; R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl group; R2 represents a hydrogen atom, a cation of a base or a group derived from an alcohol, and the bond Image in the 1,2-position represents a single or double carbon-to-carbon bond.
