ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Coal is transported by forming a first aqueous slurry of carbonaceous and ash fine particles of at least 60 percent water by weight. A free-flowing liquid lyophilic to carbonaceous fine particles in coal and lyophobic to water and ash fine particles in coal is added to the first slurry to form a mixture where less than 20% and preferably less than 10% by weight of the free-flowing liquid and the carbonaceous and ash fine particles of coal is free-flowing liquid. The mixture is then agitated to preferentially agglomerate carbonaceous fine particles in the coal to form discrete agglomerates, while the ash fine particles in coal remain substantially unagglomerated in the mixture. The discrete agglomerates of carbonaceous fine particles are then separated from the aqueous slurry and dispersed in a carrier liquid preferably of water or petroleum base to form a second transport slurry. A stream of said second transport slurry is pumped typically through a pipeline from the point of formation to a point of destination, where the discrete agglomerates of carbonaceous fine particles of coal are separated from the carrier liquid and preferably pelletized. -1-
