ABSTRACT This invention relates to a reliable and simple loading mechanism for a video tape recorder which makes it possible to rewind a loaded tape into a cassette without having to greatly force it. The mechanism employs a plunger activated by a play back or video recording button which slides a slide plate, an idler, a gear mechanism which draws a tape from the cassette through at least a pinch roller which contacts a capstan, and a stop button which restores the pinch roller toward the cassette in order to change it over to unloading. A swingable plate at the gear mechanism operates when changed over to unloading, and a swingable board operates with a pin formed at the swingable plate to restrain the slide plate from restoring. This allows the drawn-out tape to be wound into the cassette through the take-up reel when the pinch roller is restored toward the cassette.
