ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A method of making mixed esters of phthalic acid for use as plasticizers for vinyl plastics. The ester mix- ture is characterized by having a low volatility while at the same time having excellent solvency characteristics. In its preferred form, the mixed ester is made by first reacting a butyl alcohol with phthalic anhydride in a mole ratio of about 0.20 to about 1.0 mole of alcohol per mole of phthalic anhydride to provide a mixture containing the half-ester and unreacted phthalic anhydride. Next, an octyl alcohol is added in a stoichiometric amount based on unreacted acid groups along with 10 to 50 percent of the stoichiometric amount of octyl alcohol as excess. An esterification cata- lyst is added and the reaction mixture heated for a time and at a temperature sufficient to carry the esterification to substantial completion.
