A B S T R A C T The invention relates to a process for the hardening of steel workpieces which consists of heating the workpiece in a gaseous atmosphere of a purified air and propane gas mixture until at least a workpiece surface is carburized, and quenching the workpiece in a cooling area. These harden- ed steel workpieces display superior hardened properties to previously known hardened steel.
