MECHANICAL SEAL HAVING FLOATING SEAL RING ANCHORED TO GLAND RING ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mechanical seal construction including safety means for inhibiting escape of sealed fluid in the event of breakdown of the main seal assembly. The safety means includes a fixed bushing ring on the low pressure side of the seal assembly which bushing ring is sealed to the housing on which is mounted the nonrotating seal ring of said assembly positioned on the low pressure side thereof. The safety means also includes a floating bushing closely encircling said shaft and capable of following same through normal radial deflections and whipping thereof, and resilient means hold- ing said bushing nonrotatively in sealing relationship to said fixed bushing ring. The resilient means is backed against a mount- ing which also backs the nonrotating seal ring.
