ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Process for the production of 3-picoline wherein a first educt, consisting of acetaldehyde and/or acetaldehyde- acetals and/or crotonaldehyde, is reacted with a second educt, consisting of formaldehyde and/or formaldehydeacetals and/or hexamethylenetetramine, in a liquid, aqueous phase at a temperature of 180° to 280°C. in a closed vessel. The reaction is conducted in the presence of ammonia and/or ammonium ions. The reaction is also conducted in the presence of anions of inorganic and/or organic acids, which at 20°C. have an acid dissociation constant of 106 to 10-12.
